Southall Man Pleads Guilty to Stabbing Beloved West London Busker to Death

Southall Man Pleads Guilty to Stabbing Devoted Father to Death

Lee Byer, 45, from Allenby Avenue, Southall, was quickly arrested after a public appeal following a brutal stabbing in August 2022. On Monday, 29 April, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility and possession of an offensive weapon.

Byer will be sentenced on Friday, 10 May.

Brutal Attack Caught on CCTV

The victim, Thomas O’Halloran, 47, was known for busking on his accordion near Tesco on the A40 in Greenford, West London. On 16 August 2022, Thomas was returning home on his mobility scooter when the attack happened in a nearby underpass.

CCTV footage showed a man heading into the underpass at the same time as Thomas. Moments later, the man was seen leaving with a knife in hand—later identified as Byer.

Despite serious injuries, Thomas managed to travel to nearby Runnymede Gardens to seek help. London’s Air Ambulance arrived quickly but, tragically, he died at the scene. A post-mortem revealed he had been stabbed ten times, with fatal wounds to the chest and neck.

Forensic Evidence Seals the Case

Detective Chief Inspector Laura Nelson, who led the investigation, said: “His death was senseless. We tracked Byer’s movements from his release from prison right up to the attack. Forensic evidence linked him irrefutably to the crime.”

Police recovered the knife handle Byer disposed of down a drain. DNA on it matched both Thomas and Byer, playing a crucial role in building the case.

Byer was arrested at his home two days after the attack. Officers found recently burnt clothing and footwear in his garden matching what he wore that day.

Despite Byer’s claim that he couldn’t have committed the crime because he was in prison, records showed he had been released just five days earlier.

Case Unfolds Without a Motive

The murder investigation found no clear motive or prior connection between Byer and Thomas. Police relied on CCTV and forensic breakthroughs to bring Byer to justice.

Sentencing on Friday will finally close this tragic chapter for Thomas’s family, who remain devastated by the loss of their beloved father and grandfather.
