Kent Fire’s Canine Hero Buzz Nears Full Rescue Dog Status

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) has a furry star in the making. Buzz, a clever cocker spaniel, is on track to become a fully operational search dog with their elite Technical Rescue team.

From Pup to Professional in Just a Year

Buzz started training at just six months old. A year later, thanks to his handler Andy Parks, he’s smashing his schedule and showing serious promise.

‘Buzz-Eye-View’ Footage Reveals Search Skills

During a grueling three-day UK training exercise at Waddington Training Ground, Andy captured jaw-dropping footage of Buzz in action. The pile of rubble mimicked a massive building collapse — the kind of disaster where Buzz’s skills will count.

“Buzz relies on his incredible nose to sniff out live casualties,” says Andy. Keep an eye on Buzz’s quick head movements, or what they call a ‘head knock’ — a tell-tale sign he’s picked up the scent of a human survivor.

“Although he’s still training, we trust his instincts to lead him right to those in need.”

What’s Next for Buzz?

He’s currently working towards his National Resilience (USAR) certification — a tough course designed by the National Fire Chiefs Council. It has seven modules, from basic handling to complex search techniques, capped off by a rigorous final assessment.

When Buzz officially qualifies, he’ll be deployed to search for live casualties in major disasters — from local building collapses to international rescue missions. A true life-saving pup in action!
