Police Chase in W9 Ends Without Arrest Despite Suspicious Driving

On Saturday, 4 July at around 1.25pm, officers from the Territorial Support Group were on patrol in London’s W9 area amid a spike in weapon-related violence.

They spotted a vehicle with blacked-out windows acting dodgy—driving on the wrong side of the road. Cops signalled for it to stop but the car sped off instead.

High-Speed Stop on Lanhill Road

The chase ended when the vehicle stopped on Lanhill Road. The driver refused to exit at first. Inside were a 25-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman.

Both were detained under Section 1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 for a search. But after checking the car and occupants thoroughly, officers found no illegal items.

No arrests were made, and the pair were allowed to leave.

Police Probe and Clear Conduct

A video of the stop circulated on social media, stirring public interest and concern over police actions.

The Directorate of Professional Standards reviewed the footage—both from social media and officers’ bodycams—and found no wrongdoing.

Commander Helen Harper said: “We understand concerns when incidents like this get filmed without full context. We reviewed all footage and are satisfied there are no misconduct issues.”

“The vehicle’s suspicious driving in a high-violence area justified the officers’ response. We’re open to speaking to those involved if they want to.”

Officers Face Daily Tough Calls

Police emphasised that officers must make split-second decisions based on behaviour and compliance, often under difficult conditions.

They also acknowledged public scrutiny but reiterated their commitment to acting fairly and professionally while tackling crime hotspots.
