Student Attacked on Night Out Walk Home
A young university graduate was brutally attacked in the early hours after leaving a nightclub in Loughborough. The woman, in her 20s, was celebrating finishing her degree on 9 June 2019 when horror struck around 2:30am as she walked home.
18-Year-Old Stalker Follows and Stabs Victim
Hani Habte, just 18 at the time, began following the woman. When she tried to ignore him, he grabbed her arm, pulled her to the ground, and stabbed her three times in the leg. The victim fought back, hitting him with her bag, but Habte escaped the scene after the savage attack.
Justice Served: Sentence Upgraded After Government Intervention
The victim suffered serious puncture wounds, bleeding so badly she passed out multiple times. CCTV and blood evidence linked Habte to the crime.
Originally convicted at Leicester Crown Court on 19 March, Habte received a 5-year detention sentence for wounding with intent.
But after the Solicitor General, Rt Hon Michael Ellis QC MP, invoked the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme, the Court of Appeal beefed up Habte’s punishment. He’s now locked up for 5 years with an additional 3 years extended licence.
“Habte targeted a vulnerable victim, subjecting her to a callous attack and causing significant psychological harm. I am pleased the Court of Appeal agreed to increase the offender’s sentence and hope this brings some comfort to the victim and her family,” said the Solicitor General.
The boost in sentencing sends a clear message: attacks on vulnerable people will not be tolerated. Habte will now serve extra time behind bars, ensuring he faces the full weight of justice.
