Police Officer Injured in Late-Night Eid Clash in Ilford
A police officer suffered a head injury after breaking up a fight among a large crowd gathered for Eid celebrations in Ilford last night.
Massive Crowd Blocks Roads, Police Called In
At around 11.33pm, police received multiple calls about 150-200 people gathered on Ilford Lane near Dudley Road, blocking traffic. The crowd had come together for Eid celebrations, but officers quickly moved in to disperse them.
Fight Erupts Amid Dispersal, Officer Hurt
Just as the crowd began to leave, a violent fight broke out between two groups on Rutland Road. Police intervened, but one officer was struck on the head during the chaos.
One man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and assaulting an emergency worker. He became unwell en route to custody and was taken to an East London hospital as a precaution. His injuries are not thought to be serious.
Chief Superintendent Issues Warning
“While we accept that celebrations take place, and we have no desire to spoil them for the community, if they descend into violence we absolutely will step in,” said Chief Superintendent Stephen Clayman, leading the Met’s East Area Command.
“A number of calls were received last night from concerned members of the public. Though we appreciate this is a time of excitement, the sight and sound of such a large group was distressing for others.”
“Gathering this size during a pandemic is concerning. I remind all communities to respect each other and follow government social distancing guidelines.”
“After a day protecting the public, one of my officers went home with a head injury. This is beyond unacceptable. Anyone assaulting officers will be arrested and face court.”
Enquiries continue as police investigate the incident.
