Kent Police Crack Down on Modern Slavery in Dover
Kent Police teamed up with several agencies for a high-profile day of action targeting modern slavery in Dover. Nail bars, car washes, and barber shops were in the spotlight as officers checked on workers’ rights and legal compliance.
Joint Effort to Spot Exploitation
On Tuesday 29 September 2020, officers from Dover’s Community Safety Unit joined forces with Dover District Council, Home Office Immigration Enforcement, and the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority. They visited local businesses, chatting with staff and managers to raise awareness about human trafficking and modern slavery.
Those spoken to were given vital advice and a secure space to report concerns. The operation identified three individuals suspected of working illegally. Immigration Enforcement will now investigate their cases further.
Protecting the Vulnerable
“Around 50 people were spoken to at various locations and given guidance around issues of modern slavery and workers’ rights,” said Inspector Fred McCormack of Dover’s Community Safety Unit. “Kent Police is determined to protect the most vulnerable in our society and will repeat these activities regularly to build intelligence, enforce the law, and gain the trust of potential victims.”
Cllr Nigel Collor, Dover District Council’s cabinet member for community, praised the operation:
“This was an excellent example of partnership working to help support an often hidden part of the community. From the briefing at DDC’s offices and support from our new CCTV control room to multi-agency visits across the district, we have the resources to protect workers vulnerable to exploitation.”
