With Bonfire Night just two weeks away on November 5th, this year’s celebrations look set to light up private gardens across the UK. Public firework events are being cancelled left, right and centre, pushing families to create their own dazzling displays at home.
Firework Sales Rocket as Crowd Events Fizzle Out
Firework sales have skyrocketed in the run-up to Bonfire Night. Since Guy Fawkes falls on a Thursday this year, many are planning to keep the spark alive into the weekend. With official events off the cards, pop-up firework shops have sprung up nationwide, cashing in on the booming demand.
Emergency Services Bracing for a Firework Frenzy
Professional displays might be scarce, but the emergency services expect their busiest year yet. More backyard explosions mean more risks. Remember, the law is crystal clear:
- You must be 18+ to buy ‘adult’ fireworks (Category 2 and 3).
- Category 4 fireworks are strictly for professionals only.
- No setting off fireworks between 11pm and 7am—except on select celebrations like Bonfire Night (midnight cut-off), New Year’s Day, Diwali and Chinese New Year (1am cut-off).
- Fireworks can only be bought from registered sellers during specific dates: 15 Oct to 10 Nov, 26 to 31 Dec, and three days before Diwali and Chinese New Year.
- Illegal sale or use could land you a £5,000 fine, six months in jail, or a £90 on-the-spot fine.
Keep It Safe—Protect Animals and Neighbours
Animal welfare laws mean you must not cause unnecessary suffering to pets or livestock. Do not set off fireworks near horses, livestock fields, or farm buildings. If you’re planning a rural display, warn your farming neighbours well in advance to avoid chaos.
