Man, 31, Threatens Teen with Screwdriver in Shocking Lincoln Road Robbery
Omar Afzal, 31, targeted a teenage boy on May 21 while he was walking to Iceland on Lincoln Road at around 5.45pm. Afzal stopped the lad, falsely claiming he knew his dad and asking to borrow a phone to call a taxi.
Screwdriver Threat Sparks £30 Robbery
Afzal then flagged down a passing taxi and asked the victim for his dad’s phone number. As they crossed the car park behind Iceland, the boy noticed Afzal gripping a screwdriver.
Afzal’s friendly act quickly turned sinister. He demanded cash, threatening the teen with the weapon. Terrified, the boy handed over £30 before Afzal ordered him to stay put and fled the scene.
Dad’s Inquiry Leads to Arrest
The boy rushed home and told his dad about the attack. His father circulated a photo locally, which helped identify Afzal as the attacker. Police stepped in the next day and arrested Afzal at his Granville Street home days later.
Two Years and Four Months Behind Bars
Afzal faced charges for robbery and possession of an offensive weapon. He denied the claims but was found guilty after a two-day trial at Peterborough Crown Court on November 5.
The following day, he was sentenced to two years and four months in prison and slapped with a four-year restraining order.
“This was a frightening incident for the victim who genuinely feared for his life at the hands of Afzal,” said DC Gordon Logan. “I’m pleased we have been able to put him behind bars where he will have plenty of time to reflect on his actions and hopefully make better choices in the future.”
