Legendary Broadcaster Neville Wanless Dies at 88
Heartbreaking news from the North East as beloved broadcaster Neville Wanless has passed away peacefully early Friday morning, December 4. His daughter Melanie Adams shared the sad news, saying, “My sweet, handsome, loving dad passed away peacefully early Friday morning. My mum Pat and I were by his side.”
Tragic Decline After Hip Fracture
Neville’s health took a severe turn after fracturing his hip eight weeks ago in a fall while out walking with his wife Pat. His daughter mourned, “His health declined rapidly. He will be in our hearts forever and remain an endless inspiration for his strength, gentleness, courage, creativity, and character.”
Broadcasting Icon of the North East
Born in Wallsend-on-Tyne, Neville was a top talent from the start. Educated at St Bees School and trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, he scooped gold, silver, and bronze medals for acting, verse speaking, and elocution.
His broadcasting career began in 1961 with the BBC Home Service, serving as announcer and newsreader for North East regional broadcasts based in newcastle/" title="Newcastle" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Newcastle. He stayed with the BBC until 1975 before moving to Tyne Tees Television in 1971.
At Tyne Tees, Neville became the longest-serving announcer, later senior announcer and Head of Presentation. He retired in 1988 but continued as a relief announcer until 1991. His TV successor was Bill Steel.
Radio Star and Stage Performer
Even after TV retirement, Neville stayed in the game. He worked on Radio Tees, Great North Radio, Century Radio North East, and hosted the Sunday evening show My Way on hospital station Radio Tyneside.
He also showcased his acting chops on stage, performing in plays like Blitz at Whitley Bay Playhouse and Hello Dolly at Newcastle Theatre Royal.
