Met Police Officer Arrested in High-Profile Case
Sarah Everard vanished while walking home from her friend’s house, last seen on Tulse Hill in South London. Wayne Couzens, a serving Met Police officer, has now been charged with her murder and kidnap.
The 48-year-old Couzens appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court following his dramatic arrest at his home in Deal, Kent, on Tuesday.
Tragic Timeline of Sarah Everard’s Disappearance
Marketing executive Sarah, originally from York, disappeared on 3 March while walking from Clapham Junction to her home in Brixton.
Her last known sighting was caught on a doorbell camera near Tulse Hill around 9:30pm.
A week later, her remains were found in woodland near Great Chart Village, Ashford, Kent, identified using dental records.
Disturbing Details in Custody
Couzens suffered head injuries in police custody and was rushed to hospital twice after reportedly banging his head on a cell bed at Wandsworth Police Station. He previously had a brain scan following the first injury.
Investigation Expands: Woman Arrested and Released
A woman in her 30s, believed related to Couzens, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. She has since been released on bail and is due back at the police station in mid-April.
Court Appearance and Next Steps
During the short hearing, Couzens sat with his head in his hands, guarded by two officers, as charges were formally read out.
No bail application was made. Couzens was remanded in custody at Belmarsh Prison and is set to appear at Crown Court on 16 March 2021.
