Derby Man Jailed for Rape After Offering Woman Early Morning Lift
Sudesh Kumar, 41, from Carsington Crescent, Allestree, has been locked up for eight years after being found guilty of raping a vulnerable woman in her 20s. The horrific attack happened in August 2018, but he only faced justice last week at Derby Crown Court.
Night Out Turns Nightmare
Kumar was part of a group drinking at a pub in Peartree. Later, the party moved to a friend’s house. At around 4am, Kumar offered to drive the woman home. She accepted, unaware the man she trusted would betray her.
During the journey, Kumar took advantage of her vulnerable state and raped her, the court heard. The victim woke the next morning confused and alarmed. Though her memory was hazy, she confided in her mother, who contacted police immediately.
Forensic Evidence Seals Conviction
Police quickly launched an investigation. A medical exam was carried out, and critical forensic evidence was recovered from a tampon the victim attempted to discard. Despite Kumar’s denial, the jury found him guilty.
Detective Constable Fiona Rai praised the victim’s bravery:
“Kumar took advantage of a young woman who was vulnerable. We hope this sentence ensures he faces the full consequences of his abhorrent actions.”
She added,
“Kumar denied the offence throughout, forcing the victim to relive the trauma. I commend her immense courage in reporting the attack and enduring the difficult process that followed.”
Support for Survivors
DC Rai urged other survivors of rape and sexual assault to come forward, assuring that support is always available. “We are committed to bringing offenders to justice and standing with survivors every step of the way,” she said.
If you’ve been affected by rape or sexual assault, trained officers and partner organisations are ready to listen and help. Don’t suffer in silence.
