Hit-and-Run Driver Jailed for Killing 18-Year-Old Student

Mohammed Youssaf has been locked up for 30 months after mown down 18-year-old Emma Guilbert in Fenham back in November 2018. Newcastle Crown Court heard the 33-year-old was speeding at over 40mph on a 30mph limit when he struck the Newcastle University student at a pedestrian crossing on Wingrove Road.

Emma Left to Die After Horror Crash

The impact hurled Emma’s body more than 36 metres down the road. But shockingly, Youssaf didn’t stop. Instead, he fled the scene in his Peugeot 307, leaving Emma lying lifeless in the street.

Witnesses rushed to help and called for an ambulance. Emma was rushed to hospital but tragically passed away three days later.

Driver Tried to Cover Tracks With Fake 999 Calls

Youssaf later handed himself in, claiming he tried to dial 999 three times, but the calls failed. Police investigations revealed the calls were misdialled and then manually deleted from his phone.

He admitted careless driving but denied causing death by dangerous driving. The jury at Newcastle Crown Court didn’t buy it and convicted him of the more serious charge.

Sentenced to Prison and Driving Ban

Youssaf, from Wingrove Road, Fenham, received 30 months behind bars and a 51-month driving ban set to begin once he’s released. Justice served for Emma Guilbert’s tragic death.
