Lockdown Rules Loosened: What You Can Do From April 12
The UK’s lockdown “roadmap” is edging forward with fresh rule changes kicking in from Monday, April 12. While many restrictions stick around, several venues and services are back open to the public. But don’t drop your guard — hands, face, space, fresh air remain key.
What’s Back Open?
- Non-essential shops swing their doors wide again.
- Hairdressers, nail salons, and personal care in mobile settings reopen.
- Libraries and community centres welcome visitors once more.
- Outdoor hospitality venues serve up food and drink with table service only.
- Zoos, theme parks, and drive-in events like cinemas and concerts resume.
- Smaller outdoor events such as fairs and literary festivals can proceed.
- Indoor sports and leisure facilities open for solo or household exercise.
- All childcare and supervised activities indoors and outdoors are allowed for kids, with playgroups up to 15 people (under 5s excluded).
- Weddings and civil partnerships can go ahead indoors with up to 15 guests; wedding receptions up to 15 guests must be outdoors (private gardens excluded).
- Self-contained accommodation available for overnight stays within households or support bubbles.
- Care home residents can nominate two people for indoor visits following rapid lateral flow tests.
Still Playing It Safe
Despite these easings, socialising indoors with anyone outside your household or support bubble remains a no-go. Remote work is still encouraged, and journeys should be kept to a minimum whenever possible.
