Police Boost Patrols After Serious Sexual Assault in Newark Alleyway
Police have slammed the brakes on crime with high-visibility patrols after a serious sexual assault was reported in an alley off St Mary’s Memorial Gardens, Newark. The attack happened around 7:45pm on Thursday, December 28, 2023.
Rare but Shocking Incident Sparks Major Investigation
Detective Inspector Stuart Barson of Nottinghamshire Police described the attack as “exceedingly rare” but said its impact has shaken the local community. “We’re treating this as an isolated case,” Barson said, revealing a large team is now on the hunt for the culprit.
Support for Victim and Family, Police Hunt for Witnesses
Specialist officers are supporting the victim and her family through this tough time. Meanwhile, police presence has been stepped up nearby to reassure residents and keep the area safe.
DI Barson urged anyone with information or who saw anything suspicious to come forward. “If you noticed anyone acting strangely near St Mary’s Memorial Gardens around that time, please speak to us,” he said.
CCTV and Dash-Cam Footage Could Crack the Case
Police are also asking for any CCTV or dash-cam footage from the area that could help with their inquiries. “Public vigilance is vital,” Barson stressed. “Report anything unusual you find immediately.”
