Brutal Attacker Jailed for Assaulting Cops and Spitting on Medics Near Aylesford

A violent man has been locked up after a shocking rampage against police officers and hospital staff near Aylesford. Darren Selwood, 37, went on a terrifying spree of abuse and assault on the night of May 17, 2021.

Man Headbutts Officers and Soaks Them in Urine

At around 11:40pm, police were called to a disturbance at a Bull Lane address in Eccles. When Selwood was arrested, he urinated on one officer and headbutted another twice as he was shoved into the back of a police van. Selwood then battered his own head against the van’s walls and doors, spraying blood inside the vehicle.

An ambulance rushed him to hospital for treatment, but Selwood wasn’t finished.

Racist Abuse and Spitting at Hospital Staff

At the hospital, Selwood turned aggressive towards officers and medical staff, swearing loudly in front of the public. He tried to headbutt a constable and spat in another officer’s eye.

A doctor arriving to help him was hit with a barrage of racial abuse, upping the outrage.

Swift Justice: Prison Sentence Handed Down

After treatment, Selwood, of Clive House, Royal British Legion Village, Aylesford, was taken to the police station and charged with:

  • Three assaults on emergency workers
  • A racially aggravated public order offence
  • Using threatening or abusive words or behaviour

He pleaded guilty at Medway Magistrates’ Court on May 19 and was sentenced to one year and 25 weeks behind bars. This sentence also activated a previous suspended sentence for similar crimes.

Police Blast “Violent and Odious” Attacker

“Our officers work tirelessly to protect the public from harm and should be able to go about their duties without being assaulted, spat on and sprayed with blood and urine. Similarly, hardworking medical staff should be confident to tend the injured and vulnerable without being subjected to racist abuse and threats,” said Chief Inspector Omid Changizi, District Commander for Tonbridge and Malling.

“The person arrested on this occasion has shown himself to be a violent and odious individual and I am pleased that within two days of being detained he is starting a prison sentence.”
