Knife-Threat Burglars Jailed After Terrifying Ipswich Raid
Three men broke into a man’s home in Ipswich at dawn, threatening him with a knife and boiling water in a terrifying raid. The gang forced entry at around 5:45am on Saturday 13 June last year at a residential address on Neath Drive, waking the victim – a vulnerable man in his 60s.
Cash and Valuables Stolen in Early Morning Horror
The intruders demanded the victim’s bank card PIN before stealing the card, large sums of cash, and sentimental jewellery. They even threatened to pour boiling water over him. Shortly after, the stolen bank card was used at a nearby cashpoint.
The terrified victim was left shaken but thankfully uninjured.
Quick Police Action Leads to Arrests and Charges
On the very same day, police arrested three Ipswich men: 36-year-old Daniel Tovey, 37-year-old Glynn Davis, and 48-year-old William Hutchinson. They were taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre where they were questioned and subsequently charged on 14 June 2020.
Forensics pieced together damning evidence – footprints, fingerprints, and DNA found on the knife linked all three to the scene. Phone records further cemented their guilt.
Prison Sentences Handed Down at Ipswich Crown Court
At Ipswich Crown Court on Monday 24 May 2021, all three pleaded guilty to burglary. Davis and Hutchinson were handed six-year prison sentences each. Tovey received five years and five months behind bars.
DC Leia Dowsing from the Serious Crime Disruption Team said: “This was an extremely alarming and frightening experience for the victim who is vulnerable and has disabilities. One offender stayed downstairs threatening the victim while the other two ransacked the upstairs rooms.”
“The emotional distress was worsened when the offenders stole precious jewellery, including two gold rings that belonged to the victim’s late mother and wife. These rings were pulled from his fingers and held great sentimental value.
“Thankfully, some of the stolen items, including the rings, were later recovered.”
“The courage of the victim and supporting witnesses was vital in securing these guilty pleas for this very serious and unpleasant crime.”
