EasyJet Slashes 1,700 Summer Flights, Chaos at Gatwick
Budget giant EasyJet has thrown a massive spanner in the works for summer travellers, axing 1,700 flights. The fallout hits hardest at London Gatwick, the airline’s main base, where daily cancellations are causing havoc.
Hundreds of Flights Cancelled, 180,000 Passengers Affected
In recent weeks, hundreds of flights to and from Gatwick Airport have been abruptly canned. EasyJet has notified 180,000 passengers booked for July, August, and September that their flights won’t be flying.
Despite the chaos, EasyJet says it has rebooked 95% of travellers onto new routes. Still, around 9,000 flyers remain without alternative flights.
Blame Game: Air Traffic Control Delays and Crowded European Skies
The airline blames “unprecedented” air traffic control delays—three times worse than before the pandemic—and squeezed airspace over Europe for the disruptions. Yet, it insists it has a fully staffed crew, with more pilots and cabin staff than ever.
On one brutal Saturday, EasyJet cancelled 40+ flights at Gatwick, leaving over 6,000 passengers stranded. The cancellations will roll on through the busy summer months, just as schools in England and 1 break up for holidays.
Not All Doom and Gloom: Roughly One Day’s Flights Cancelled
EasyJet stresses these cancellations represent about one day’s flying schedule. Despite the hit, the airline still plans to operate roughly 90,000 flights over the summer period.
Travellers are advised to check flights carefully and prepare for ongoing disruption at Gatwick this summer.
