Blaze Ravages Battersea Flat After Candle Ignites Curtains

Firefighters raced to a Battersea block of flats on Westbridge Road tonight to tackle a fierce fire believed to have started from an unattended candle. The blaze tore through a 20th-floor flat, destroying it completely after curtains caught light and flames quickly spread.

Residents Evacuate as Flames Rip Through High-Rise

Five people escaped the burning flat before the fire brigade arrived, with a further 50 residents evacuating the building amid thick smoke and visible flames. London Ambulance crews rushed a woman and a child to hospital for treatment.

Firefighters Douse Flames in Under an Hour

Station Commander Peter Johnson, at the scene, revealed: “Crews were faced with a lot of smoke issuing from the top of the block on arrival. The visible flames led to a high volume of emergency calls.”

The Brigade was alerted at 8.02pm and had the fire under control by 8.53pm. Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters from Battersea, Fulham, Wandsworth, North Kensington, and nearby stations battled the blaze.

Investigation Underway into Cause of Fire

The London Fire Brigade’s control room handled 18 emergency calls relating to the incident. Officials are currently investigating the exact cause of the fire.
