Cold Case Killer David Fuller Admits 1987 Murders of Two Young Women
David Fuller, 67, finally confessed at Maidstone Crown Court on 4 November 2021 to the brutal murders of Wendy Knell and Caroline Pierce, crimes that shocked Tunbridge Wells back in 1987. The twisted ex-electrician also admitted 51 other sexual offences, including horrific abuses in mortuaries, with sentencing set for a later date.
Devastating Murders Left Unsolved for Over 30 Years
Wendy Knell, just 25, was found dead in her Tunbridge Wells bedsit on 23 June 1987. She had been sexually assaulted, beaten, and strangled. Barely six months later, on 24 November, 20-year-old Caroline Pierce was abducted outside her home and later discovered naked and murdered near Romney Marsh, over 40 miles away.
The original investigations found no forced entry at Wendy’s place, while neighbours heard Caroline’s screams at the scene. Forensic teams collected DNA samples, but in the infancy of profiling technology, no killers were identified.
Breakthrough with DNA Tech After Decades of Cold Case Frustration
Years of dead-ends ended in 2019 when Kent and Essex detectives linked DNA evidence from both crime scenes. Working with the National Crime Agency, police created a list of potential suspects with familial ties to the killer’s DNA. After testing just 20 people, the net closed in on Fuller, who was arrested at his home in Heathfield, East Sussex, in December 2020.
Forensic breakthroughs revealed Fuller’s DNA on a duvet, towel, and pillowcase from Wendy’s home, and on Caroline’s tights — evidence so strong it was billions of times more likely to be his than anyone else’s. His fingerprint was also found on a plastic bag at the first crime scene, matching up only after his arrest.
Fuller’s Lies Unravel as Police Uncover Dark Past
Despite Fuller’s claims that he barely knew Tunbridge Wells, police found paperwork proving he lived on the same road as Wendy and frequently visited Caroline’s neighbourhood. His job as an electrician took him close to both victims’ homes. Fuller also had strong ties to New Romney — near where Caroline’s body was dumped — through family visits and cycling clubs.
Photos of Fuller from the 1980s show him wearing trainers matching a shoe print found on Wendy’s blouse. He was known as a keen amateur photographer and likely used the same local shop where Wendy worked to develop his films.
Detective Superintendent Ivan Beasley said: “Wendy and Caroline’s families have suffered unimaginable pain. We refused to accept their killer would escape justice. DNA advancements finally gave us the answers. The evidence proves without doubt that David Fuller committed these depraved crimes. I hope the families can find some comfort after all these years, though it’s heartbreaking we couldn’t act sooner, especially for Wendy’s late father.”
Fuller remains in custody awaiting sentencing, as police honour decades of relentless work by every officer involved since 1987.
