Fireworks at Sainsbury’s Thameside Depot: Trailer Blaze Sparks Massive Warehouse Inferno
About 70 firefighters battled a fierce blaze at Sainsbury’s Thameside depot in Charlton after a refrigeration unit sparked a fire in a trailer next to the building on Saturday night.
Trailer Fire Sparks Chaos
The fire broke out just after 6.30pm at the chilled distribution centre on Lombard Wall. Six fire engines and an aerial ladder rushed to the scene as flames quickly spread to a nearby trailer and threatened the 20m by 30m warehouse.
Swift action by crews confined the inferno to two HGV trailers, but smoke damage and fire-scorched doors were left in the warehouse wake.
Mass Evacuation and Damage
- All 120 staff on-duty were evacuated safely before the fire brigade arrived.
- Two lorries were completely gutted, with a third lorry and four loading bays also damaged.
- Fire crews from five local stations tackled the blaze, bringing it under control by 8.35pm.
Warning After Repeat Blazes
Following a similar accidental fire at the site just months ago, London Fire Brigade is now warning businesses to avoid parking vehicles near buildings to reduce fire risks.
A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said: “Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a single-storey warehouse fire on Lombard Wall in Charlton. The cause is under investigation.”
Stay tuned as investigators comb the scene to uncover the exact cause of the blaze. This latest fire serves as a fiery reminder about fire safety around warehouses and refrigerated trailers.
