Major People Smuggler Nabbed in East London

A top figure in a European people-smuggling ring was caught red-handed in East London today. Twenty-nine-year-old Hewa Rahimpur, an Iranian national living in Ilford, was arrested by the National Crime Agency (NCA) in Wanstead Park at 1pm on 4 May.

Wanted Across Europe

Rahimpur is wanted in Belgium for allegedly masterminding a network involved in “systematic human smuggling” via small boats. Belgian prosecutors say he sourced boats in Turkey, routed them through Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands before sending them to the northern French coast. From there, migrants were ferried across dangerous waters.

The arrest follows a joint investigation between the NCA and Belgian authorities, sparked by the October 2021 discovery of boats and outboard motors found hidden in a car near the Belgian-French border.

Cracking Down on Deadly Crossings

Rahimpur was tracked down in Romford Road, Manor Park, and taken into custody. He faces Westminster Magistrates tomorrow (5 May), where extradition procedures will start.

NCA Deputy Director of Investigations Jacque Beer: “Rahimpur stands accused of being a major player in one of the most significant criminal networks supplying boats to people smugglers. His arrest shows the power of cross-border cooperation with Belgium and Europol.”

Frank Demeester, West Flanders prosecutor: “Smuggling by small boats is a top priority for us. Each crossing we stop could save lives from potentially fatal journeys.”

NCA Warns Maritime Industry to Stay Alert

The NCA continues efforts to disrupt the supply chain for people smugglers, targeting those who provide boats and marine gear to criminal gangs.

Andrea Wilson, NCA Deputy Director of Organised Immigration Crime: “Many vessels attempting the Channel crossing are death-traps, patched with gaffer tape and planks. Tragically, lives are lost, making it vital we crack down on this criminal activity. We urge the maritime industry on both sides of the Channel to report any suspicious purchases.”

The crackdown sends a clear message: UK and European forces are united in stopping horrific people-smuggling operations dead in their tracks.
