Man Strangled and Burgled in Shocking Manor Lane Murder
Police found 78-year-old David Varlow dead at his home in Halesowen after his brother and neighbours raised the alarm over his disappearance. His house was left ransacked, and investigators revealed he had been strangled with a telephone cable.
DNA Links Burglar to Brutal Killing
Adris Mohammed, 44, from Birmingham, was caught after his DNA was found on a knife handle, a pair of scissors, and the very phone cable used in the strangulation. Evidence showed Mohammed targeted Mr Varlow’s home three times.
- Attempted burglary on 24 October
- Aggravated burglary on 3 November
- Final fatal burglary ending in murder
At Birmingham Crown Court, Mohammed was found guilty of murder, multiple burglaries, and fraud. He was also convicted of another burglary on November 11.
Accomplice Also Sent Down
Mohammed’s accomplice, 42-year-old Swan from Winson Green Road, was found guilty of burglary and fraud and handed a six-year prison sentence.
Detective’s Blast as Justice Served
“Mr Varlow suffered an appalling ordeal, being tied up and essentially left for dead by a man whose only interest was to steal from him,” said Det Insp Ranj Sangha, leading the investigation.
“We believe Mohammed returned to the house for the final time, knowing Mr Varlow was either still imprisoned or dead. Instead of calling for help, he carried on stealing, with Swan’s help.”
“Thankfully, such violent burglaries are rare, but that’s little comfort to Mr Varlow’s family. I hope today’s verdicts bring some solace knowing justice was served.”
