Large Houses with Hugh Dennis witnesses the actor and comedian unlocking the doors to some of the largest domestic dwellings in the United Kingdom. Hugh explores a variety of massive homes, from the colossal Broughton Hall, which has its own private railway, to a jaw-dropping island fort off the coast of West Wales.
Hugh will travel through a massive domestic wonderland over four episodes, witnessing astonishing conversions and meeting eccentric owners. Along the way, he’ll tell the stories of each massive property and get his hands dirty with some of the tasks required to keep the massive homes in full working order, such as cleaning chandeliers and a marathon six-hour hoovering session.
Strangers on a Plane is a new stripped-down daytime format in which five strangers compete to show that they can vacation better than anyone else. Five holiday-hungry Brits jet off to the same popular holiday destination for a five-day getaway at the start of the week, with each traveller taking control of the group’s activities for 24 hours.
As each vacationer takes turns planning their ideal day, they must make key decisions such as where everyone stays, where everyone eats, what activities the group participates in, and what the evening entertainment is. The sky is the limit in terms of creativity, but the budget is set, and if they go overboard, they may end up with a holiday nightmare.
The group votes at the end of each week to see who planned the best day, with the winner receiving another week in the sun with a friend or family member. Everyone has a different idea of what constitutes a good holiday, and these strangers on a plane will have to please more than just themselves if they want to be remembered as a holiday hero.
“I’m thrilled to have commissioned two hugely entertaining series from the team at Strawberry Blond,” said Gill Brown, Channel 4’s commissioning executive. Hugh Dennis is the ideal tour guide for an eclectic mix of fantastic, if not gigantic, homes that I’m sure our More 4 audience will find fascinating, while Strangers on a Plane is set to be a wild and raucous daytime delight on Channel 4. “I can’t wait to see what our visitors get up to.”
