Man Arrested Under New Domestic Abuse Law for Strangulation
On Wednesday, June 29, James Preston was arrested over multiple alleged assaults on a woman. Officers charged him with intentionally strangling the victim, using a new offence introduced by the Domestic Abuse Act 2021.
Domestic Abuse Act Powers Put to Work
The Act, which came into force on June 7, has already seen kent-police/" title="Kent Police" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Kent Police apply the strangulation charge in three cases, including Preston’s. Convicted offenders face up to five years behind bars.
Preston Remanded in Custody
The 33-year-old appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on June 30. Besides strangulation, he faces three counts of assault. Preston was remanded in custody ahead of his next court hearing.
