Helicopter Water Bombing Tackles Surrey Wildfire
A daring aerial assault is underway to douse the Hankley Common fire. Yesterday, an Airbourne Solutions Eurocopter AS350 buzzed between Frensham Pond and Hankley Common, dumping water to slow the blaze’s spread.
Fire Rages for Fourth Day, 50 Hectares Scorched
The wildfire has now been burning for four days, scorching around 50 hectares of land. Thankfully, no Ministry of Defence property or neighbouring homes have been harmed so far. Residents who evacuated on Tuesday have been allowed to return.
Emergency Teams Join Forces to Tackle Blaze
Surrey Fire and Rescue are coordinating efforts with Waverley Police, Ministry of Defence Police, and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation. Helicopter water bombing is being deployed for the first time in Surrey to fight this fire.
This additional effort by ourselves, the Ministry of Defence, and Surrey Police should help us put a stop to this wildfire,” said Acting Chief Fire Officer Dan Quin. “I’m extremely proud of all crews working in difficult weather conditions. We’re making progress.”
Inspector Sam Adcock, Waverley Borough Commander, added: “We’ve supported aerial firefighting exercises and seen several road closures lifted. I thank the local residents for their patience and Surrey Fire and Rescue for their tireless work.”
