RNLI crews ditch chips to launch lifeboat in dramatic rescue call at fish supper event
Fundraiser Interrupted by Emergency
The Littlehampton RNLI fundraising team hosted a fish supper evening at the boathouse on Fisherman’s Quay on Friday, 7 October. Supporters enjoyed classic fish and chips and got up close with the lifeboats while volunteers explained how they save lives at sea. But the feast was suddenly cut short when a call came through from HM Coastguard about a potential person in the water.
Swift Action Under Windy Seas
The volunteer crew sprang into action. Shore team grabbed their safety gear, while the boat crew suited up in drysuits, boots, and helmets. Cheered on by the crowd, they raced from the crew room to the slipway and launched the B-Class inshore lifeboat, Renee Sherman, into rough and windy conditions.
As they headed out of the harbour, the team received word they were no longer needed and were stood down. They made their way back safely to Littlehampton.
RNLI Praises Public Support
Nick White, Lifeboat Operations Manager and Deputy Launch Authority, said: “We were delighted to welcome so many members of the public to our station, giving us the chance to show the vital work our volunteers do. Our crews are ready 24/7, and tonight’s launch gave everyone a perfect glimpse of an emergency call in action. Thankfully, all was well and the crew were stood down.
The fundraising branch is crucial, as without their money-raising efforts from the shop and events like tonight’s fish supper, the RNLI couldn’t operate. The dedication of our volunteers and generosity of the public keep us afloat and save lives at sea – we thank everyone for their incredible support.”
