Three Suspects Nabbed After Staff Spot Suspicious Behaviour

On Monday afternoon, 17th October, a vigilant employee at an electronics store in Newtownabbey flagged three men who matched descriptions of known shoplifters. The trio quickly fled in a BMW, but thanks to the Police Service’s Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Intercept Team, they were stopped in Sprucefield and arrested.

The men, aged 19 and 20, face charges including theft, attempted theft, burglary, and being equipped for theft. They remain in police custody.

Police Ramp Up Patrols to Crush Business Crime

The arrests come amid a national police campaign targeting business crime with high-visibility patrols in towns and local centres. Officers are working closely with businesses and communities to tackle retail crime.

Chief Superintendent Darrin Jones, Northern Ireland’s Business Crime lead, said: “The week of action is an opportunity to bring police and partners together to tackle the key issues of business crime in our communities.”

He urged retailers to report offences promptly: “These arrests show how reporting can lead to results. An eagle-eyed staff member alerted police and these offenders were caught.”

“Under-reporting is a problem across all business sectors. We ask business owners to notify us if you’ve been a victim or notice suspicious activity. Your reports help us target resources, apprehend criminals, and reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.”
