Zero Tolerance on Drink and Drug Driving This December

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit are on high alert this December as part of Op Limit, the national crackdown on drink and drug driving. Expect roadside breath tests and drug wipes targeting anyone suspected of driving impaired.

Last Year’s Crackdown: Over 400 Arrests

During last year’s campaign, police stopped more than 1,000 vehicles and arrested over 400 drivers for drink or drug-driving offences. The message is clear: one drink can double your crash risk, and driving at twice the legal alcohol limit makes you 30 times more likely to cause a collision.

Roadside Tests & Sobriety Checkpoints in Full Swing

  • Everyone caught committing moving traffic offences will face roadside breath tests, no matter what.
  • Drug-wipe kits will provide instant checks for drug impairment before further blood tests in custody.
  • Intelligence-led fixed sobriety checkpoints will pop up across the region to catch offenders.

Chief Inspector Warns: Plan Ahead or Pay the Price

“The harm caused by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs cannot be underestimated. We attend crashes that wreck families’ lives. Plan ahead — keep money aside for a taxi or choose a sober driver. It’s simply not worth the risk,” said Chief Inspector Craig West. “Every year innocent road users are endangered by those who think driving drunk is acceptable. This campaign is a firm message: it’s NOT acceptable. My officers work on this all year, but December and the Christmas period will see extra focus.”

So far in 2022, drink and drug driving contributed to 312 collisions. This festive season, don’t become a grim statistic — stay safe, stay sober, and don’t drink and drive.
