Brits Slam Government’s Immigration Record – Dissatisfaction Hits Highest Level Since Brexit
A fresh survey reveals UK public fury over how the government is handling immigration. The latest Immigration Attitudes Tracker, covering England, Scotland, and Wales, found a whopping two-thirds (66%) are unhappy with politicians’ approach – the worst ratings since before the Brexit referendum.
Dissatisfaction Soars to Record High
Discontent has jumped sharply from just 41% in 2020 to a staggering 66% now. This marks the highest dissatisfaction since the survey began in 2015, signalling growing unease about immigration management across the UK.
Tories Blamed for ‘Failing’ on Channel Migrant Crossings
Among Conservatives unhappy with the government, 82% say ministers aren’t doing enough to stop the relentless flow of migrants crossing the Channel. This comes amid accusations that the government has dropped the ball, with 2023 seeing record numbers making the perilous journey.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has defended his “stop the boats” policy, insisting it’s making headway and tackling the crisis.
Labour Supporters Share Criticism But Focus on Treatment of Migrants
Dissatisfied Labour voters are split, with 46% concerned about Channel crossings. However, many also highlight that the government’s approach fosters a “negative or fearful environment” for migrants already in Britain and treats asylum seekers poorly – a point largely dismissed by Tory critics.
Public Opinion Divides on Immigration Levels
- Nearly half (48%) of UK adults want immigration reduced – up from 42% last year.
- 67% of Conservative backers back cutting immigration.
- Only 38% of Labour supporters agree; over half (56%) want immigration numbers to stay the same or rise.
- 43% believe immigration benefits Britain, though negative views rose from 29% to 37% since 2022.
The Ipsos survey, conducted online in July and August with 3,000 adults, paints a picture of a nation divided yet increasingly frustrated with immigration policy and the politicians charged with it.
