Knife-Wielding Thief Caught After String of Raids in Wisbech
Oluwagbemileke Awoyemi, 19, went on a crime spree starting 5 March, stealing from Asda in North End before escaping on a stolen bike.
Robbery at Harecroft Stores
Just two days later, Awoyemi struck again at Harecroft Stores on Harecroft Road. Wearing a balaclava, he pulled a knife on a man in his 50s and demanded cash. The terrified man handed over around £45 before Awoyemi sped off on a bike.
Mobile Phone Snatch in Wisbech Town Centre
On 9 March, a woman in her 50s spotted Awoyemi following her on his bike as she walked into Wisbech town centre. Moments later, she felt an “aggressive snatch” – her mobile phone was stolen. The victim alerted two nearby phone shops to watch out, and Awoyemi attempted to sell the stolen phone later that day. A shop owner flagged the police, forcing Awoyemi to flee.
Captured by Sharp-Eyed Special Constable
Awoyemi was finally arrested on 13 March in Victoria Road, Wisbech, after a Special Constable recognised him as wanted for multiple offences. Charges include theft of a bike and items from Asda, two counts of robbery, and possession of two knives—a kitchen knife found in his bag upon arrest and the weapon used in the Harecroft Store robbery.
The 19-year-old from North Brink, Wisbech, admitted all charges. On Monday 23 May, he was sentenced to two years and two months behind bars at Peterborough Crown Court.
Detective Constable Pete Wise said: “This was a good spot by one of our Special Constables, who was in the right place at the right time.”
“We do not know what Awoyemi’s intentions were the day he was arrested, but we do know he had already carried out a knife-point robbery and was then found with another knife on him.”
“I would appeal to the public to let us know about any concerns that someone may be carrying a weapon.”
