Asim Hasan has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, Aaisha, after she secretly recorded his violent abuse on her mobile phone. The incident took place on 19 May 2022 at the family home in Canning Town, east London. Hasan, 33, stabbed his wife 36 times, resulting in her tragic death.
Despite denying any intent to seriously harm his wife, Hasan was found guilty of murder by a jury at the Old Bailey. Judge Anthony Leonard KC handed down a minimum sentence of 21 years.
During the trial, it was revealed that the couple had engaged in arguments over financial matters, Hasan’s behavior, and his unfounded accusation that his wife was having an affair. Aaisha Hasan, fearing her husband’s violent tendencies, began recording him on her phone and shared her concerns with friends on WhatsApp. She stored images in a folder labeled “Hidden,” including pictures of a black eye and cuts on her face taken just 11 days before her untimely death.
In a desperate WhatsApp message sent to friends on 9 May, Aaisha expressed her fear that Hasan would have killed her had they been alone in the house. She explained that she was reluctant to involve the police due to the potential consequences for her husband. She simply wanted him out of the house to ensure her safety.
The court heard recordings of Hasan accusing his wife of infidelity despite her repeated denials. A concerned neighbor contacted the police, but as Aaisha appeared well and did not file a complaint, no further action was taken.
Another recording captured Aaisha accusing her husband of physically assaulting her and expressing her fear that he would eventually kill her. Tragically, on the morning of 19 May, Hasan dialed emergency services and admitted, “I just stabbed my wife.” Aaisha sustained 36 wounds in what was described as a ferocious and savage attack, with one stab cutting a portion of bone from her skull.
Upon arrival at the couple’s residence, police and paramedics discovered Aaisha lying in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at 7.20am.
Following his arrest, Hasan confessed, stating, “I am guilty, and you can charge me.”
