Flowers and heartfelt tributes have been left outside The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon after a young girl was tragically killed in a car crash. The horrific collision happened yesterday morning (July 6) when a Land Rover smashed into the school building on Camp Road, injuring 16 others.
Driver Arrested Over Deadly Crash
A woman in her 40s, believed to be the Land Rover driver, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She stayed at the scene, while police urge the public to avoid speculation as investigations continue.
Community in Shock and Mourning
Locals are devastated by the heartbreaking loss. New Malden residents Sophia Graham, 27, and Tayla Landsberg, 22, visited the police cordon to pay their respects. They spoke of the shock gripping the neighbourhood.
“When we found out one of the kids had died, it was awful. When the police made their announcement, it was so sad to see even them get emotional. It’s made a big impact on everyone. Kids walk in the Common freely without thinking about it,” said Graham and Landsberg.
Landsberg added, “It’s usually very peaceful, very bubbly with lots of fun activities going on.”
Official Condolences and Support Poured In
London Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed deep sympathy for the family, pupils, and all affected. “My heart goes out to everyone affected, including the other children and adults injured as a result of this incident. I wish them all a full recovery,” he said.
The Study Preparatory School released a statement saying they were “shocked and devastated” by the crash. They extended condolences to the bereaved family and those injured. The school stressed the welfare of their students is their top priority and promised support for pupils and families during this traumatic time.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the crash is not being treated as terrorism-related. Their investigation remains open.
