A 17-year-old Canadian teenager has been questioned by Japanese authorities after allegedly carving his name into a wooden pillar at the Toshodaiji Kondo temple complex, a UNESCO-listed site, in the historic city of Nara. The incident occurred on July 7, and a Japanese tourist who witnessed the defacing promptly reported it to the temple staff, who then contacted the police.
According to a police official, the teenager used his nail to carve the name ‘Julian’ into the pillar, approximately 1.7 meters off the ground. The young individual was questioned by Japanese authorities the following day, accompanied by his parents.
