Following an extensive investigation into the tragic deaths of 12-year-old Sunnah Khan and 17-year-old Joe Abbess off Bournemouth beach on May 31, Dorset Police has announced that no criminal offences were committed. The victims were suspected to have drowned after getting caught in a riptide near the pier at the popular resort.
The police probe had initially focused on determining whether the Dorset Belle, a sightseeing boat, had caused the dangerous sea conditions leading to the incident. However, authorities concluded that the vessel was not to blame. A man who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter has been cleared of any wrongdoing and will face no further action.
During a preliminary inquest hearing held last month, it was suggested that a riptide played a role in the teenagers’ tragic deaths. Riptides are powerful currents that swiftly carry people and objects away from the shore and into deeper waters.
Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Corrigan of Dorset Police stated, “Information was provided to the police, suggesting that the movement of a boat, the Dorset Belle, immediately prior to the incident, could have contributed to the creation of dangerous sea conditions. Witnesses also indicated previous issues with the vessel causing similar problems.”
In light of these concerns, the Dorset Belle was impounded and thoroughly examined as part of the investigation. However, after consulting with experts and conducting a comprehensive review of the evidence, it was determined that the boat’s movement did not contribute to the tragic incident.
Following the deaths, Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole Council temporarily suspended all boat operations from the pier as a precautionary measure. The council will continue to assess safety protocols in light of this incident.
Stephanie Williams, the mother of Sunnah Khan, has been vocal about improving water safety following the loss of her daughter. Last week, her proposals were heard in Parliament during a debate on water safety and drowning prevention. MP Rob Butler raised the issue, highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures.
Dorset Police will collaborate with the coroner to compile a comprehensive report on the incident and investigation. A further pre-inquest hearing is scheduled for September 18.
