Transport Union Chief Calls for Government Engagement as Strike Action Continues – UKNIP

Transport union leader Mick Lynch has voiced his frustration over the lack of engagement with government ministers since January, despite ongoing strike action by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union. The union has announced strike dates for July 20, 22, and 29, following a year-long dispute over pay, jobs, and working conditions.

The upcoming strikes will involve station staff, train managers, and catering staff, prompting authorities to advise passengers to check their travel arrangements and prepare for potential disruptions.

Speaking on Sky’s Sophy Ridge On Sunday program, Mick Lynch expressed his disappointment with the lack of communication from the government. He stated that the RMT is available for negotiations but has not had contact with a government minister since January. Furthermore, Lynch mentioned that even employers have ceased negotiations.

Lynch highlighted the disparity between the treatment of the RMT union and other unions, stating that other unions have been offered more favourable terms without the conditions and job losses faced by the RMT. He emphasised that strikes will continue until a satisfactory agreement is reached.

Shadow Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds criticised the government’s approach, acknowledging that their initial response was misguided and lacked respect for the public sector. Reynolds argued that the government’s handling of the situation has contributed to the ongoing industrial action.

As the strike action looms, it remains to be seen whether further negotiations will take place and whether a resolution can be reached to address the concerns of the RMT union. Passengers are advised to stay informed about potential disruptions and make alternative travel arrangements if necessary.’
