A new 10-part series titled “The Banksy Story” has been released on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds, offering an exclusive glimpse into the world of renowned street artist Banksy. The series features interviews with Steph Warren, a former employee of Banksy’s infamous Picture On Walls print shop, who worked closely with the artist during a critical period in his career.
Presenter James Peak, a self-proclaimed Banksy super-fan, takes listeners on a journey to uncover the story of the enigmatic graffiti artist who transformed spray painting into high art. The series delves into Banksy’s rise to fame, his influence on the elite art world, his approach to increasing pressure and notoriety, his charitable endeavours, and the administration of his secretive world.
Producer and presenter James Peak spent a year convincing Steph Warren to share her behind-the-scenes stories from her time at Pictures on Walls when Banksy’s career was on the brink of exploding into the mainstream. Warren provides unique insights into Banksy’s landmark 2005 Crude Oils show in London, which famously featured live rats running around. She recalls the unforgettable moment when Banksy’s father discovered his son’s true identity for the first time and was astonished by the artwork his son had created.
During the series, listeners will also hear an interview with someone claiming to be Banksy, in which they discuss their motivations behind placing artworks on the walls of famous museums and galleries worldwide. In a soft southern accent with occasional Bristolian twangs, the person describes themselves as a “painter and decorator” and shares humorous anecdotes about their mischievous stunts and subtle satires on the art world.
“The Banksy Story” not only recounts the captivating journey of the elusive artist but also features analysis from cultural historian John Higgs and other connoisseurs. It offers a comprehensive exploration of Banksy’s evolution from a street artist to a global phenomenon, featuring firsthand accounts from those who were present during pivotal moments in his career.
The series is available as a box set on BBC Sounds and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on weekdays at 1.45 pm. Banksy enthusiasts and art enthusiasts alike can now immerse themselves in the captivating world of one of the most influential contemporary artists of our time.
