Morrisons Unveils Bold Plans for Peacehaven’s Meridian Centre Revamp
Morrisons threw open its doors last Friday and Saturday for a buzzing public exhibition in Peacehaven. Hundreds of local residents turned out to check the exciting redevelopment plans for the Meridian Centre and to have their say.
Residents Voice Concerns Amid Excitement
The event was a hive of activity, with Morrisons staff on hand to guide visitors through the ambitious makeover. Sussex.News caught up with shoppers and shop owners to get their thoughts.
- Some residents flagged up worries about the library’s modest size. The new library will be 300m²—a limit set by East Sussex County Council, which local groups are ready to challenge.
- Ali and Luke, owners of the Greetings Card Shop—the oldest tenant in the centre with 18 years under their belt—fear a forced closure of up to two years during construction. They’re anxious about whether they can return and afford smaller units post-redevelopment.
Morrisons is exploring options to keep supermarket access open during building work, including bus services and home deliveries, with details due soon.
A Shop-Starved Town Gets a Major Boost
Peacehaven has long lacked decent shopping options, with most residents heading elsewhere. The new development promises a vibrant town centre packed with jobs and fresh retail opportunities.
The Meridian Centre itself has been a Peacehaven fixture for 40 years but is now outdated and cramped. Since snapping up the site in February, Morrisons has planned a striking overhaul designed to transform the area.
What’s in Store?
- A spanking new Morrisons supermarket boasting 27,000 sq ft of sales space — 50% bigger than the current Co-op.
- A bustling ‘Market Street’ experience featuring specialist butchers, bakers, and fishmongers.
- Flexible retail and commercial units designed to suit a range of businesses.
- Integration of the existing Community House and a brand-new library operated by East Sussex County Council.
- A public square engineered for markets and community events, surrounded by lush landscaping.
- A spacious car park with 309 spaces, including disabled, parent & child, click & collect bays, and electric vehicle charging points.
Peacehaven residents are clearly eager to see these plans through, hoping the fresh development will breathe new life into their town.
