UK Braced for a Wet and Wild Friday
Get your umbrellas ready! Much of the UK faces a sodden Friday, with multiple weather warnings in place. Rain will sweep northeast, dumping the heaviest downpours in central and southwest Scotland and Northern Ireland. Expect 20-30mm of rain across much of these areas, with some parts of Scotland hitting over 60mm, and Northern Ireland possibly seeing up to 40mm.
Amber Warning Hits Southwest Scotland
An amber rain warning is active for southwest Scotland Friday morning. Downpours could pile up 50mm of rain widely, with upland areas potentially experiencing over 70mm. High ground in northern Scotland isn’t spared either — snow could settle up to 10cm across the Grampians and higher elevations above 200m. Strong winds will batter coasts in Northern Ireland and western Scotland, with gusts reaching 60mph.
Jet Stream Fuels Stormy Conditions
The UK’s soggy and gusty weather is driven by a powerful jet stream, supercharged by temperature clashes across the Atlantic. Although freezing conditions in North America aren’t directly hitting UK shores, the cold-to-warm air contrast there is strengthening this jet, unleashing a string of low-pressure systems. A wet and windy New Year weekend lies ahead, with Saturday expected to bring the most persistent rain.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Helen Caughey warned, “It’ll be an unsettled New Year weekend with frequent, heavy rain and a chance of snow on high Scottish ground. New Year’s Eve will be wetter, especially in Scotland and parts of southern and southwest England, where strong winds will roar along the English Channel. New Year’s Day will bring showers and spells of rain across central and southern UK, with a mix of sunshine and showers to the north.”
Looking Ahead: A Split Weather Pattern Next Week
Next week, a weather split is expected: high pressure holding steady in the south, low pressure dominating the north. This setup means calmer, drier conditions in the south but soggy, windy spells with showers in the north. However, exact rainfall and wind spreads remain uncertain—so keep an eye on updates as forecasts sharpen.
Stay tuned and check Met Office warnings for the latest on this stormy spell.
