Major Flooding Hits Eltham as Water Main Bursts

Emergency services were called out early this morning (January 6) after a massive water main burst on Eltham Road, causing widespread flooding and chaos across the area.

Huge Fire Response to Flood Crisis

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters from Lewisham, Eltham, East Greenwich, and nearby stations rushed to the scene. They’re battling floodwaters covering a huge area – roughly 600m by 200m.

Three basement flats have been flooded to about 20cm deep. Even the Lee Green Fire Station was left under six feet of water. Roads have been closed, and parts of Eltham Road are underwater, with floodwater spilling near shops and restaurants.

Thames Water Apologises As Repairs Underway

Thames Water issued an apology to locals experiencing low or no water pressure. Engineers are currently on site, working hard to stop the leak and restore supplies.

“We’re really sorry if you have low pressure or no water following a large burst pipe early this morning on the A20 Eltham Road, in SE12,” Thames Water said.

“We’re on site and working to shut off flow from the burst. After that, supplies should begin to return to the affected area. We’d also like to apologise to drivers who have been inconvenienced by the A20 closure.”

Road Closures and Warnings in Place

The Metropolitan Police have cordoned off affected roads. Closures run from A2212 Burnt Ash Road in Lee Green to Weigall Road. Transport for London has declared this a major incident, urging people to avoid the area.

The London Fire Brigade also warned the public to steer clear while crews work to divert the floodwaters and contain the damage.
