Grandson Jailed for Life After Murdering Grandfather and Killing Neighbour’s Cat

A 27-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his grandfather. Benjamin Dunlop, homeless and with no fixed address, pled guilty to the shocking crime at Leicester Crown Court.

Chilling Crime Scene in Measham

Ronald Dunlop, 75, was found dead just before 5pm on December 1, 2021, at a home in Hart Drive, Measham, where Benjamin had been temporarily staying. East Midlands Ambulance Service rushed to the scene after a call raised concerns about both men’s welfare and reports that Benjamin might have harmed himself.

Tragically, alongside Ronald’s body, a neighbour’s cat was also found dead – a grim detail adding to the horror of the case.

Confession and Charges Laid

Benjamin later returned to the address and admitted to paramedics that he had injured both his grandfather and the cat. Just two days later, he was officially charged with murder and criminal damage related to the cat’s death. He received a concurrent six-month sentence for the animal cruelty charge.

Justice for Ronald and a Family Left Shattered

“First and foremost, my thoughts remain with Ronald’s family,” said Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Nicole Main of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit. “While this sentence will not bring him back or repair the tragic situation this family has found itself in, knowing that Benjamin is serving his time will hopefully allow them to move on from what has been a long wait for justice.”
