Brighton Rail Chaos as Flooding and Fault Shut Main Line

Flooding Forces Closure Between Clayton and Patcham

Commuters faced travel chaos this morning after Network Rail shut the Brighton main line. Flooding and a points failure caused the disruption between Clayton and Patcham tunnels – affecting trains from Hassocks to Preston Park.

Why the Flooding Happened

Network Rail explained the flooding was due to the railway being in a deep cutting just above the water table. This vulnerable spot gave way to water buildup, halting services.

Line Reopens After Safety Checks

By midday, the line was back in action. Engineers confirmed the track was safe with no further issues detected, easing the misery for frustrated passengers.
