Met Unveils Bold Turnaround Plan to Win Back Londoners’ Trust

The Met Police has launched a game-changing Turnaround Plan to reform the force and tackle crime head-on. Announced at the Institute of Engineering and Technology on January 10, 2023, the plan was published today, kicking off a 12-week public consultation to gather crucial feedback.

Cracking Down on Corruption and Crime

Sir Mark Rowley, the Met Commissioner, vowed swift action following the shocking David Carrick scandal. “Our communities demand reform—not just in standards and culture, but in cutting crime,” he said. Rowley promised, “My team and I will restore Londoners’ trust. The Turnaround Plan shows how.”

  • New Anti-Corruption and Abuse Command: A proactive unit with boosted resources to root out misconduct.
  • Data-Driven Policing: Enhanced use of technology to detect corruption and abuse.
  • Neighbourhood Policing Boost: Thousands more officers and 1,600 new PCSOs to flood local communities.
  • Protecting Women and Children: Tougher targeting of perpetrators behind violence, improved victim support, and better use of crime data.
  • Victim Services Overhaul: Attending every home burglary report and personalised contact to keep victims informed.

Mayor Backs £millions Investment in Police Reform

London Mayor Sadiq Khan threw his full weight behind the plan, pledging funding for 500 extra PCSOs as part of a wider crackdown on violent crime. “Officers are as disgusted as the public by recent failings,” Khan said. “This plan is a vital step to rebuild trust, reduce crime and weed out officers who fall short.”

The Met wants Londoners’ views on neighbourhood policing, community engagement, and diversity. The feedback will shape a refreshed version of the Turnaround Plan, due in April. Rowley warned that reform won’t happen overnight but stressed the vital importance of community partnership in reviving consent-based policing.

Two years of radical change are ahead, with new tech adoption and heavy investment in officers promised. London demands the highest standards – and the Met is ready to deliver.
