A Memorial Plaque Has Been Unveiled In Honour Of An Ex-peckham Student Who Died While Attempting To Save A Drowning Woman From The River Thames

Folajimi “Jimi” Olubumni-Adewole, a former Harris Academy Peckham student, passed away in April 2021.

The Living Bankside charity unveiled a plaque in his honour yesterday (January 22) in Cathedral Square near London Bridge, where he jumped in.

Jimi and another man, Joaquin Garcia, were on their way home from work at a central London restaurant when they fell into the water.

The coastguard and marine police rescued Joaquim and the woman, but Jimi was never found.

Six hours later, his body was discovered near London Bridge.

The Mayor of London, who was present at the ceremony, stated that Jimi’s extraordinary act of bravery will not be forgotten.

He added that the plaque ensures that the “Bermondsey boy and hero” will not be forgotten by the city.

Jimi Olubunmi-extraordinary Adewole’s act of bravery, jumping into the Thames to save a woman from drowning, will never be forgotten,” he continued.

The unveiling of this plaque today means that the city that mourns Jimi will never forget him – the Bermondsey boy and hero who became a symbol of light.
