Hertfordshire Man Jailed for Ramming Cop Off Motorcycle in London Getaway
Joseph Ward, 24, from Green Street, Royston, Hertfordshire, was locked up at Wood Green Crown Court on Wednesday, 1 February.
Ward had already admitted 14 counts of assault causing actual bodily harm, impersonating a police officer, reckless driving and fleeing from police.
Violent Act Caught on Patrol
On 1 July 2022, Violent Crime Taskforce Inspector Tony McGovern was on motorcycle patrol in Haringey when he spotted Ward’s car at the junction of Upton Road and Woolmer Road.
After stopping, Inspector McGovern spoke to Ward through the driver’s window. Suddenly, Ward sped forward then reversed, smashing into the officer and knocking him off his bike before speeding off.
Inspector McGovern was rushed to hospital with painful injuries to his legs, shoulders, and back.
“I have been a police officer for 18 years and I never expected to be deliberately rammed off my motorcycle in such a violent and aggressive act,” said Insp. McGovern.
“I am still recovering from the injuries I sustained that day, but I am determined to serve the people of 1 by removing violent and dangerous offenders from the streets.”
Manhunt Leads to Arrest
Ward was soon identified after a rapid investigation linked him to the incident. Officers discovered he was already wanted for an earlier offence on 23 June 2022, when he impersonated a police officer on Eade Road, N4, demanding money from a motorist.
After weeks on the run, Ward was caught in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, on 20 July 2022.
More Charges and Hefty Sentence
Police also connected Ward to a car crash in Crouch Hill on 5 July and a police chase in Enfield on 6 July, where he crashed into two police vehicles.
Following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, Ward was charged with 14 offences on 21 July 2022.
“Joseph Ward is a dangerous man, and I have no doubt he would have committed more crimes,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Lee Hill, head of the Violent Crime Taskforce. “I’m relieved he’s been jailed and commend Tony for his exceptional bravery.”
“Our officers 1 tirelessly to keep the public safe from violent crime, and we will never tolerate attacks on emergency personnel.”
