Derby Wins Race to Host Great British Railways HQ

Derby is set to become the beating heart of Britain’s rail industry after being chosen as the new home of Great British Railways (GBR). This bold move promises a flood of high-skilled jobs and a major boost for the Midlands city.

Derby Outruns Competition to Land GBR HQ

  • Derby tops a tough six-location race to secure GBR headquarters
  • Chosen for strong industry ties, extensive rail network links, and a thriving local rail business cluster
  • Secures a key government win in the plan to reform and modernise UK railways

Transport Secretary Mark Harper hailed the announcement as “full steam ahead for rail reform.” He said:

“Today’s announcement is not only a huge win for the brilliant city of Derby, but a key milestone for the entire rail industry across the country. Great British Railways will put the passenger first, promoting collaboration and innovation across a joined-up, efficient and modern network.”

Derby’s Rail Heritage Secures the Prize

Derby, Europe’s largest rail hub, boasts a rich history of manufacturing rolling stock continuously since 1840. Councillor Chris Poulter, Derby City Council Leader, said:

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Derby has been selected to become the home of Great British Railways. Rail heritage is at the heart of our city, and this recognition by the government is massive. This will turbocharge investment not just for Derby but the wider East Midlands, helping to level up the whole region.”

GBR’s Nationwide Impact

  • While Derby hosts the HQ, GBR plans empowered regional hubs across Britain, including the five shortlisted cities
  • Jobs and investment will spread across the North, South East, South West, and London
  • GBR will unify track and train operations, focusing on customers and streamlining rail finances
  • The private sector will play a key role locally, regionally and nationally

Anit Chandarana, Lead Director of the GBR Transition Team, added:

“Derby as HQ is a huge step towards creating a simpler, better railway for all of Britain. Regional centres will bring decision-making closer to communities, making railways more responsive and efficient.”

Next Steps and What This Means for Britain

The GBR Transition Team will now collaborate with Derby to find the perfect headquarters site in the city.

The Midlands is already a transport powerhouse with Department for Transport and HS2 bases in Birmingham. Adding GBR HQ in Derby cements the region’s status as a national transport supercluster.

Following the announcement on 21 March 2023, Transport Secretary Harper’s recent George Bradshaw Address outlined several rail improvements, including:

  • Expansion of single leg pricing across the LNER network to better balance passenger demand
  • Extension of pay-as-you-go ticketing in south-east England
  • Creation of a strategic freight unit to set long-term freight growth targets

All eyes are on Derby as it gears up to drive Britain’s rail revolution — delivering jobs, modernisation, and a customer-first approach to the entire network.
