Black Hawk Helicopter Missing Off Miyako Island

A UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter vanished from radar Thursday afternoon during a reconnaissance mission north of Miyako Island, sparking fears of a crash. Officials say debris resembling aircraft parts was spotted nearby, about 1,800km (1,120 miles) southwest of Tokyo.

High-Ranking Officer Among Missing Crew

The chopper, based at a major army base in Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu, carried 10 crew members. Among them was the division commander, Yuichi Sakamoto, adding urgency to search efforts. Ground Self Defense Force chief Yasunori Morishita confirmed the helicopter’s disappearance and the debris sighting.

Tensions Mount Amid Chinese Naval Activity

Japan is rapidly beefing up its defence in southwestern regions amid growing Chinese military assertiveness. In the last four days, at least three Chinese warships have sailed past Miyakojima, an island hosting GSDF anti-ship missile launchers since 2019. Chinese vessels frequently transit this route from the East China Sea to the Pacific, though it’s unclear if the missing Black Hawk was monitoring their movements.

Government Launches Massive Rescue Operation

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stressed that “saving lives is our utmost priority” as maritime and air self-defense forces, alongside the coastguard, scour the area. Coastguard patrol ships have found oil traces possibly linked to the helicopter, but officials have not confirmed the connection.
