Jealousy sparked daylight shooting in Merton – attackers jailed for nearly 30 years
Attack in broad daylight shocks witnesses
A young man in his 20s was shot multiple times in broad daylight after Daniel Gaudin and Shannon Rule travelled by train from Waltham Forest to Merton to carry out a terrifying attack. The chilling assault unfolded in front of horrified onlookers.
Couple’s twisted love triangle ends in attempted murder
On Thursday, 22 December, Shannon Rule, 23, from Chingford, was found guilty of attempted murder at Kingston Crown Court. Daniel Gaudin, 23, of Waltham Cross, had already pled guilty earlier.
The court revealed a messy love triangle: Rule had been dating both victims unbeknownst to each other. Jealous Gaudin sent threatening texts after learning about the rival suitor.
Set-up leads to brutal shooting
Gaudin convinced Rule to lure the victim to a meeting near Gaudin’s home in Morden. The victim, believing he would meet only Rule, agreed. Instead, Gaudin appeared and opened fire, shooting the man multiple times.
Police were called at 2:03pm on Tuesday, 22 June 2021. The victim was rushed to hospital with life-changing injuries and still requires ongoing care.
Perpetrators caught after botched escape
Gaudin and Rule fled, but their escape route led them right back to the crime scene. Firearms officers quickly arrested them. During questioning, Rule denied knowledge of the gun or intent to shoot, but her lies were exposed by warning texts she sent to the victim about Gaudin’s firearm.
Overwhelming CCTV, witness, and forensic evidence sealed their fate.
Detective Inspector Iain Wallace said: “These sentences reflect how seriously the judge took their ruthless attack born from jealousy and insecurity. The victim’s life was shattered in an instant. We hope this conviction brings some comfort to him and his family.”
“Gaudin and Rule have paid for their cold-blooded crime. There is no place for violence on our streets. The Met will do everything to bring offenders to justice.”
Sentences:
- Shannon Rule: 30 years in prison
- Daniel Gaudin: 27 years plus 2-year extended licence
