Man Calls Police: “I’ve Done Something Terrible”
Adam Merritt, 33, from Orton Malborne, Peterborough, shocked cops in the early hours of 29 June. He phoned police, confessing he had “done something terrible” at home.
Father Found Stabbed to Death
Merritt told the call handler his father was dead – and not from natural causes. After some pushing, he admitted to stabbing his dad multiple times with a kitchen knife. Robert Merritt, 60, had cared for Adam after a schizophrenia diagnosis.
Officers arrived just after 1am. Merritt cooperated and was arrested at the scene. Police discovered a bloodied knife in the kitchen sink and Robert’s body in the rear bedroom. Paramedics pronounced him dead there and then.
Family Mourns Loving Dad and Grandad
Robert’s family paid tribute, calling him a “loving father and grandfather” with a “great sense of humour” and “a heart of gold” who “would help anyone.”
Investigation Finds Murder Confirmed
The post-mortem revealed Robert died from stab wounds. Defensive cuts on his arms and hands suggested he tried to fight back. Merritt refused to answer police questions and was charged with murder but deemed unfit for trial.
Today (18 April), a facts trial at Cambridge Crown Court confirmed Merritt committed the killing. His sentencing date is yet to be set.
