Union Demands Better Pay and Proper Negotiations
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham slammed the government for failing to offer a fair deal. She urged ministers to reopen talks and deliver “a proper wage offer” that tackles the crippling recruitment and retention crisis in the NHS. The government’s current 5% pay rise plus a one-off £1,655 top-up for 2023-24, she says, simply isn’t enough.

The Department of Health & Social Care branded the strike “disappointing” and warned it will pile “more pressure” on the overstretched NHS. Officials urged the public to ring 999 for life-threatening emergencies only and to use NHS 111 online for all non-urgent health issues.
