Benefit Fraud Takes a Hit: Overpayment Drops £400 Million in a Year

Good news for taxpayers! Official figures reveal fraud and error in the UK benefits system are falling. The Government is cracking down hard, determined to protect public money and keep fraudsters at bay.

Fraud and Error Rates Plummet

  • Universal Credit (UC) overpayments slashed by £400 million in a year
  • Overall fraud and error down from 4.0% (£8.7 billion) to 3.6% (£8.3 billion) in 2023
  • UC losses cut from 14.7% (£5.92 billion) to 12.8% (£5.54 billion)

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) reports a significant drop in fraudulent claims and claimant errors, with error overpayments now at their lowest ever recorded rate.

Government Vows No Let-Up in Fight Against Fraud

“Our welfare system provides a strong financial safety net for vulnerable people, and no one should be able to cynically abuse that for profit,” said Mel Stride MP, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

“We are cracking down on fraudsters. Today’s figures show encouraging progress as DWP stops new fraudulent claims and catches those shamelessly exploiting the system,” she added.

But Stride warns against complacency. The Government’s £900 million Fraud Plan aims to save taxpayers over £9 billion across the next five years.

New Powers and Tougher Penalties on the Horizon

The fight is far from over. DWP plans to introduce tough new powers once Parliamentary time allows, including:

  • A new civil penalty to deter fraudsters
  • Expanded data-sharing with banks to check claimants’ savings and overseas residency
  • Increased powers for DWP officers to search, seize evidence, and make arrests

Tom Pursglove MP, Minister responsible for tackling fraud, said:

“Benefit fraud is never a victimless crime. Stopping money going to fraudsters means more help for those who truly need it.”

“Cutting fraud supports the Prime Minister’s priorities by reducing national debt and helping curb inflation — protecting hardworking taxpayers’ cash.”
